Sub Working Group 2.2 - Compact Antenna Systems for Terminals (CAST)

The subworking group is a natural continuation of COST 259 SWG2.2 and COST 273 SWG2.2, which established testing procedure and performance criteria for small terminals. Initial investigations on antenna diversity for small terminals were started in COST273 SWG 2.2 and the proposed standard for evaluating performance was made with multi-antennas in mind. Now the time has come to investigate and optimize the actual performance and test methods for both single and multiple antenna terminals. Furthermore, as more systems (with increasingly complex structures and materials) are included in the small terminals, coupling and self interference are becoming an issue which may also be investigated in the subgroup.

Items being considered include:

  1. Test method including the antenna system, for antenna diversity and MIMO.
  2. Test method including the antenna system, in the presence of self interference.
  3. State of the art in quantifying performance (e.g., TRP, TIS, and MEG) and methods to improve it.
  4. Actual link and system performance gain of antenna systems compared to conventional single antennas under typical small terminal conditions (typical scenarios and user interaction).
  5. The development of measurement-based antenna testbed with the capability of double-directional channel estimation, to facilitate performance evaluations in real environments without repeated measurements.
  6. The study of performance characteristics and tradeoffs in the joint antenna-channel interactions, including novel MIMO antenna structures (e.g., switched parasitic antenna and intelligent quadrifilar helix antenna) and arrangements, the modeling of nearfield objects, and use of coupling compensation techniques (e.g., matching networks). Joint design with radio front-end, involving issues with noise, current consumptions, etc.
  7. Theoretical limits on the number of antennas and obtainable performance for a small physical space.
  8. Requirements related to the electromagnetic radiation e.g. SAR and maximum electric field – measurement methods and optimization.
  9. Evolving requirements on the performance of both single and multiple antenna systems, including multiband, multistandard, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and ultrawideband (UWB) applications.
  10. Antennas for new services e.g. DVB-H, where very large bandwidth are required for very small terminals and e.g., tunable antennas maybe the solution.

  2. Models and tools for antenna systems performance analysis
  3. Examples of highly efficient antennas and antenna-systems for compact terminals.
